As winners of MLS Cup 2010, the Colorado Rapids qualified for the 2011-2012 CONCACAF Champions League - and I got to go with the team to the three away games: in Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico.
On August 23, 2011 the Rapids played in San Pedro Sula, Honduras against Real Espana. I went ahead of the team with the security director to help translate and prepare for the team's arrival.
There was a lot of concern because of the situation in Honduras, which ranks high in terms of murders and violence. We had an armed guard with us at all times. Me and the security guy had to check a handful of items, from rooms, meals, transportation, police escorts, etc. A lot was already in place per the guidelines, so we just confirmed that things were set to run as planned.
The game itself was cool - the stands were packed and the crowd was into it - but we had no problems with travel or while in the country. Real Espana scored late and we finished tied 1-1. I was also still doing my duties as Director of Digital Media, and I posted a photo gallery on the Rapids Facebook page with captions of the scene. Check it out here.
